It this time of year, the Lofoten Islands offer a landscape unlike any other: hundreds of islands, sharp snow-covered peaks plunging into the sea, and small fishing villages with a magical atmosphere. We will explore this meeting place of sea and mountains on snowshoes, breaking trail through Norway’s pristine wilderness and keeping an eye on the sky for the Northern Lights.
Day 1: Milan to Evenes
Meet at Milan Malpensa Airport for the flight departing at XXXX, scheduled to arrive at Evenes Airport at XXXX. We will collect the rental cars and drive to Kabelvåg, where we will settle into our accommodation. After a short visit to the town, we will return for the night.
Day 2: Haukland–Uttakleiv loop Elevation gain: 450 m · Distance: 9 km
Have you ever snowshoed beside the sea? Today is your chance. About an hour’s drive from Svolvær, we will visit one of the most spectacular beaches in the Lofoten Islands. Its winter atmosphere is striking and almost otherworldly. Our circular route follows the coast between Haukland and Uttakleiv, taking in remarkable scenery and views from above of the famous Haukland and Vik beaches. Afterwards, we will visit Henningsvær, one of the islands’ most distinctive villages, often called the Venice of the Arctic. We return to Kabelvåg in the evening for dinner and the night.
Day 3: Arctic villages and sunset on Ryten Elevation gain: 600 m · Distance: 6 km
Today we will visit some of the Lofoten Islands’ most iconic villages. We will drive to Å, the little village at the “end of the world”, and explore some of the archipelago’s most beautiful places. On Moskenesøya, postcard-perfect villages such as Reine, Sakrisøy and Hamnøy offer some of the most recognisable views of Lofoten. On our way back, we will stop at historic Nusfjord, a museum village and UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Norway’s oldest and best-preserved settlements. In the afternoon, we will climb Ryten to watch the sunset over the Arctic sea from the summit—an unforgettable experience.
Day 4: Searching for the Northern Lights on Mount Tuva Elevation gain: 550 m · Distance: 8 km
In the morning, we will explore the charming town of Svolvær, just a few kilometres from our base. After lunch, we will prepare for an evening snowshoe hike in search of the Northern Lights. If conditions are in our favour, we may witness one of nature’s most magical displays. Our route takes us up Mount Tuva, away from artificial lights, where we can enjoy the landscape and the night sky at their best. We return to our accommodation for the night.
Day 5: Hovstand and a summit at sunset Elevation gain: 450 m · Distance: 6 km
Today we explore the Hov peninsula. An isolated mountain rises here above the surrounding landscape, offering exceptional views of the Norwegian Sea. We will climb it in the last light of day to make the most of this extraordinary setting. Before the hike, we will visit the beautiful Hovsund lighthouse near the clear-water beaches of Gimsøy and its picturesque little church by the sea. We return to Kabelvåg for the night.
Day 6: Snowshoeing to Stendalstinden Elevation gain: 700 m · Distance: 8 km
Our final hike is one of the most spectacular: a journey through the fjords and valleys near Svolvær, the main town of the Lofoten Islands. This remote, wild landscape captures the atmosphere of the Arctic. The route leads to the summit of Stendalstinden. On our return, we will have time to explore the town before going back to our accommodation and packing for the following morning’s departure.
Day 7: Trollfjord RIB trip in search of sea eagles
We depart from Svolvær on a guided safari to spectacular Trollfjord, an important area for sea eagles. Travelling by rigid inflatable boat (RIB) lets us move quickly through the fjords and approach the rock walls safely. During the trip, sea eagles may circle only a few metres from the boat, offering a memorable sight and excellent photographic opportunities.
Day 8: Return journey to Evenes.
We will arrive in the afternoon for the flight back to Italy at XXXX, bringing our adventure in the Far North to a close.
